Thanks to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), our local youth and adults are on a journey to healthier living. UAPB Kids in the Kitchen was a fun and interactive program at the Pine Bluff Main Library at 600 South Main Street in Pine Bluff, AR. According to Angela Howard, a UAPB Agricultural Family Consumer Science Department member and extension program aide at UAPB, the hour-and-a-half weekly sessions were filled with engaging nutrition lessons, physical activities, and healthy snack preparation. Howard also teaches a class at the Watson Chapel Public Library for adults interested in learning about nutrition and healthy living. Individuals interested in attending sessions at either library may contact Howard by email at [email protected] or by phone at 870-575-8531 for details.
This program is one of several events hosted through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). EFNEP provides community education classes for income-eligible youth and adults that promote nutrition and physical activity as a means of maintaining a healthy lifestyle free from chronic disease, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for our community.
During one of her recent classes, Howard shared handouts and taught the importance of cleanliness, safety, and having an adult presence while in the Kitchen. She also reminded participants to follow directions and have everything needed for a recipe before beginning to prepare it. She encouraged class participation by asking questions and allowing the young people to give answers to the best of their ability.
At one point, she led the class in a “Germ buster” exercise that included a “Germinator Punch.” Students stood, took a boxing stance with hands balled up into fists, and used their arms to punch straight ahead and up in the air.
Howard also teaches a class at the Watson Chapel Public Library for adults interested in learning about nutrition and healthy living. These sessions are held on Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. until no later than 3:30 p.m. until October 30, 2024. These classes are free and open to everyone.
