On Aug. 28, Union Pacific launched its 10-state Big Boy No. 4014 Heartland of America Tour offering the general public and media an opportunity to witness history in motion as the legendary steam engine chugs its way across the Midwest and South, including Arkansas.
Big Boy will make several stops in Arkansas, before crossing into Texas. The stops:
· Sept. 13 – Piggott, 1:30 – 2:00 p.m. CT, Jackson St. Crossing
· Sept. 14 – Hickory Ridge, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. CT, Laurel St. Crossing
· Sept. 14 – Brinkley, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m. CT, Central Delta Depot Museum, 100 W. Cyprus St.
· Sept. 14 – Pine Bluff, 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. CT, Pine Bluff Museum Depot, 201 E. 4th Ave
· Sept. 15 – North Little Rock, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. CT, 1000 W 4th St.
· Sept. 16 – Kingsland, 11:45 – 12:15 p.m. CT, Johnny Cash Birthplace, Maple St. Crossing
All attendees must remain 25 feet back from the tracks when taking a picture or viewing the locomotive, in accordance with Union Pacific’s safety protocols. Never take a picture or video standing on the track or the ballast and never climb on the locomotive or equipment.
Big Boy No. 4014 is one of 25 built in the 1940s to conquer the steep grades of Utah’s Wasatch Mountain Range during World War II. Only eight of the 25 survive and Big Boy is the only one still in operat
