UAPB Women’s Hoops: Starters Score Double-Figures to Defeat Mississippi Valley 78-57 on Senior Night
PINE BLUFF, AR – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team saw all five starters reach double figures in points and defeated the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 78-57 at home Saturday.
The Golden Lions (16-13, 11-5) had five players score in double figures, led by Coriah Beck, who had 21 points and six rebounds. Maya Peat tacked on 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks and Tia Morgan chipped in as well with 11 points and seven assists.
UAPB shared the ball well in Saturday’s game, racking up 24 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Morgan dished out the most for the Golden Lions with seven assists and Kaila Walker also chipped in with six assists of her own.
The UAPB defense was a problem in Saturday’s game, forcing 15 Mississippi Valley State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Walker led the way individually for the Golden Lions with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 6-5 advantage, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 2:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Morgan, to increase its lead to 13-5. The Golden Lions then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 15-7 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.
The Golden Lions maintained their lead in the game’s second frame and entered halftime with a 22-18 edge. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring six of its seven points close to the basket.
Following intermission, UAPB continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 26-20 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Beck, to expand its lead further to 34-20 with 7:20 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Golden Lions added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 51-36 edge. UAPB knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 29 total points.
UAPB kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Uriah Jennings’ layup, to grow the lead to 78-55 with 56 seconds to go in the contest. The Delta Devils narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-57 win.
