UAPB Womens Hoops Drop A Heartbreaker to Prairie View A&M 67-65 in overtime
PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – The UAPB women’s basketball team fell to the Prairie View A&M Panthers 67-65 in overtime on the road Saturday.
The Golden Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Stephanie Okowi, who had 16 points and two blocks. D’Arrah Allen tacked on 15 points and Jailah Pelly chipped in as well with 13 points and five assists.
The UAPB defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday’s game, forcing 16 Prairie View A&M turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Okowi’s one steal led the way individually for the Golden Lions.
How It Happened
UAPB struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie View A&M kept adding to that lead, building a 26-16 advantage before UAPB went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Uriah Jennings, to narrow its deficit to 26-22. The Golden Lions continued to chip away, reducing the Prairie View A&M lead to 30-29 heading into the break.
UAPB’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Golden Lions faced a 49-46 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Prairie View A&M kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 54-49 advantage before UAPB went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Nadiyah Byard’s jumper, to seize a 57-54 lead with 4:06 to go in the fourth. The Panthers then fought back to even things up at 59-59 and send the game to overtime. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
Prairie View A&M then edged ahead in overtime, leaving UAPB behind 67-65 at the final buzzer.
