UAPB Women Hoops Start Hot, But Fall Late to Alabama State at Home 71-60

PINE BLUFF, AR – The UAPB women’s basketball team out-rebounded the Alabama State Lady Hornets 44-33, but fell 71-60 at home Saturday.

The Lady Lions had two players score in double figures, led by Coriah Beck, who had 17 points. Maori Davenport added 15 points and six rebounds and Demetria Shephard added five points, three steals and three blocks.

Davenport pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 19 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.

UAPB did a great job disrupting Alabama State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Shephard’s three rejections led the way individually for the Lady Lions.

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run to take an early lead with 8:03 left in the first quarter. The Lady Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-19 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 22 points.

The Lady Lions could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 39-35.

Alabama State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-44 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Beck, to tie things up at 49 with 1:14 to go in the third. The Lady Lions could not advance their rally further as the Lady Hornets took a 53-49 lead into the fourth quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 71-60. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 11 points in the paint.
