UAPB Baseball: Golden Lions Claim Sweep in 5-4 Victory Over Southern
PINE BLUFF, Arkansas —Senior Carlos Rodriguez collected two extra base hits to help lead the UAPB Golden Lions over the Southern Jaguars 5-4 Saturday.
Junior Steffan Fak got the win out of the bullpen for UAPB. The right-hander went two shutout innings, giving up one hit, no walks and striking out three. Junior Nate Monceaux also pitched well, going 3.2 innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking one and striking out four.
Rodriguez’s two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-5 day, and included a double, a triple and two RBI. Senior Brant Voth put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Senior Ben Van Maanen also contributed for the Golden Lions, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the first inning. UAPB got an RBI single from Voth, scoring Rodriguez from third base.
The Jaguars then scored two runs to retake their advantage heading into the fifth inning, when the Golden Lions responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UAPB scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Rodriguez, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Golden Lions.
Southern clawed back to tie the ballgame at four before UAPB reclaimed a 5-4 advantage in the seventh inning. The Golden Lions scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Van Maanen. The score remained 5-4 for the rest of the game, as UAPB held on for the win.
