On Monday, April 21, 2025, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force sought to apprehend 39-year-old Gary Powell at the West Plaza Apartments in Southwest Little Rock.
Powell was wanted on charges of Felony Fleeing and two counts of Rape.
After confirming Powell’s presence inside the apartment, authorities issued commands for him to surrender. Instead, Powell retreated further into the residence.
Subsequently, officers heard a single gunshot from the room where Powell was located. A robot equipped with a camera was deployed to assess the situation, revealing Powell injured with a shotgun beside him.
Despite his injuries, Powell managed to exit the apartment, where he was then taken into custody.
Paramedics on the scene provided immediate medical assistance before transporting him to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) for treatment of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The U.S. Marshals Service requested that the Arkansas State Police’s Criminal Investigation Division conduct an investigation into the shooting incident.
