Two people were killed, and four others injured in a two-vehicle accident near Hazen in Prairie County Monday.

According to a preliminary report, Luis Vega Romero, 42, of Las Vegas, Nevada was eastbound n the westbound lane of I-40 at the 198-mile marker in a 2008 Chevrolet at 1:50 a.m.

A 2018 Nissan driven by Tiffany Nance, 37, of Fort Smith was westbound and steered to the left as she saw the Chevrolet approach. Romero steered to the right, causing a head-on collision.

Two passengers in Nance’s vehicle, Cynthia S. Brown, 66, of Abbeville, South Carolina and James C. Southerland, 47, of Fort Smith were killed.

Nance and two minor passengers in her car were injured as was Romero. They were taken to three different hospitals for treatment.

The deaths bring to 300 the number of people killed on the state’s highways so far this year.
