Razorback star Hagen Smith and Valley View High school pitcher and outfielder Slade Caldwell were taken in the first round of the MLB Draft on Sunday. Smith, considered by most to be the best pitcher in college baseball this past season was selected #5 by the Chicago White Sox, while Caldwell, who has signed last season with Ole Miss, was taken 29th in the opening round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is projected to play in the outfield in pro ball. Two other pitchers from Valley View Eli Crecelius and Lance Davis, who have signed with the Hogs, could be high picks as well. Smith is projected to make a fast rise in the minors, similiar to last year’s top pick Paul Skenes, who will be starting in the MLB All-Star game. Smith is slotted to recieve almost $8 million dollars to sign with Chicago.
