A two-vehicle accident on the Martha Mitchell Expressway at Commerce Road Thursday resulted in the death of a Pine Bluff man.
According to a preliminary report from the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, a 2004 GMC driven by Rudolph A. Atherley, 88 was southbound on U.S. 65B (Martha Mitchell Expressway) in the turn lane to turn south onto Commerce Road. A 2021 Subaru was also southbound in the inside lane.
The report said the driver of the GMC suddenly made a left turn in front of the Subaru causing the Subaru to collide with the GMC. Atherley was taken to Jefferson Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The accident was reported at 2:20 p.m. and the death was the 189th so far this year on the state’s highways.
