Nancy Elizabeth “Polly” McGhee, 98, of Star City, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. She was born July 5, 1926, in Lincoln County to the late Thomas Franklin and Estell Glover McFalls. She graduated from Star City High School in 1944.
On December 21, 1944, she married Robert T. McGhee in San Diego, CA, where he was serving in the United States Navy. They eventually settled in Star City where they built their family home and became proud parents of Gary Thomas and Becky Kay. Polly worked for many years as the bookkeeper for Ollar’s Thriftway.
She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and after retiring from Ollar’s, she became the church secretary where she served for over thirty years before retiring at the age of 92. She was a passionate supporter of the American Red Cross and served as the local coordinator of blood drives for many years. Polly was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She loved fishing, crocheting, watching Jeopardy, working in her vegetable garden, and mowing her lawn. She spent many hours playing dominoes and cards with her family and friends. Even at age 98, she was an avid user of technology and used her iPad daily to complete puzzles, play games, and keep up with family and friends on Facebook.
Polly was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert T. McGhee; granddaughter, Lori Elizabeth Fish Heiderscheidt; son-in-law Curtis Ray Fish; three brothers, Willie Ben McFalls, Curtis McFalls, and Thomas McFalls; and a sister, Eathel Campbell.
Survivors include a son, Gary T. (Detri) McGhee of Star City; daughter, Becky Fish of Star City; a sister, Hazel (Bill) Love of Greenbriar; five grandchildren, Kelly (Gerald) Haynes of Star City, Samuel T. (Summer) McGhee of Star City, Tony Heiderscheidt of Little Rock; Daniel T. (Kari) McGhee of New York, Katy Pearson of Cabot, Lee Ellen Lynch of Cabot; 8 great-grandchildren: Jackson Haynes, MD, Emma Kate McGhee, Madison Heiderscheidt, Ella McGhee, Maelea McGhee, Maggie McGhee, Lillian Pearson, and Jadyn Heiderscheidt.
Visitation will be at 1:00PM Saturday, November 9, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Star City with the funeral service following at 2:00PM. Bro. Elwin Ollar and Bro. Daniel McGhee will officiate. She will be laid to rest in Drake Cemetery. Pallbearers are Samuel T. McGhee, Gerald Haynes, Tony Heiderscheidt, Robbie Brown, Mike Love, Mike Creighton, and Robert Wilson Floyd.
