James “Jamie” Cowan, a former pastor from Arkansas, has plead guilty to three counts of raping his minor children and has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
This plea was part of an agreement, and additional details were provided by Jana Bradford, the Arkansas prosecutor for the 9th West District.
Cowan has also received a suspended sentence of 30 years upon release, but must serve at least 70% of his initial sentence, which equates to 35 years. This means Cowan will be 81 years old at the time of his release, effectively making the sentence a life term.
The plea deal was offered to consider the victims’ wishes, preventing them from experiencing further trauma through a court trial.
Cowan, identified as a former pastor of the Little River Community Church in Winthrop, Arkansas, mentioned his pastoral role in a motion for bond reduction.
