Amy Abney, the former president of Second Chance Fur Dogs, a charity based in Monticello, recently entered a guilty plea for theft of property in Drew County Circuit Court. The Drew County Prosecuting Attorney’s office had charged Abney and Andrea Chambers with felony theft, alleging that they unlawfully took control of property from the charity between February 1, 2022, and June 4, 2024, as part of an ongoing scheme.

As part of the plea agreement, Abney has agreed to reimburse the charity $20,000, with $8,000 to be paid immediately.

During court proceedings, it was revealed that she had “borrowed” the funds from a lock box at a local bank with the knowledge of another person from the group, but without the board’s consent.

The court suggested that a 10-year probation period would allow Abney sufficient time to repay the charity in full.

Abney has also agreed to testify against another defendant in a separate case related to the charity’s missing funds. No court date has been set for this matter, and both Abney and Chambers are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.
