Pine Bluff Police Chief Kelvin Sergeant said Friday that after the storm hit Sunday night, his first job was to access where trees had fallen across roadways and onto houses, and make sure there were no people trapped inside.

Appearing on the Oldies 101.3 morning show with Greg and Will, Sergeant said he and his wife were out Sunday night and were headed home when the storm blew in.

“It got quite frightening,” he said. “There were some limbs falling out of trees and a couple of them fell onto the roadway as we were driving down the road.”

After the initial assessment, Sergeant said officers checked to make sure that roads were cleared of debris and in some cases blocked them off and contacted the street department who was responsible for the clean-up.

“If it was in the street that would be the street department but if it was on private property then it is on the homeowner,” Sergeant said.

He also talked about his initial impressions as he made his way around town.

Sergeant said that he has noticed more movement in the city now than when the curfew was first put into place.

“I think what is happening is that being in the house closed up for so long, people are starting to get a little anxiety and want to move about,” he said.

Sergeant also said he did not think now is the time to remove the curfew.

“Pine Bluff has gone through a lot of things over the years but we always prevailed through them and we will with this situation too,” he said.
