A Dermott woman was killed Thursday when the vehicle she was driving was hit by a train in Ashley County.

According to a preliminary report, Beverly Cokley, 77, was westbound on Ashley Road 63 approaching a railroad crossing and a Union Pacific train was northbound approaching the intersection.

The 2022 Ford Escape she was driving crossed the intersection and was struck by the train. After impact, the vehicle was pushed off the tracks and ended up in a ditch.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident was reported at 9:02 a.m. and the death was the 500th of the year on the state’s highways.
