UAPB Volleyball: Lady Lions sweep Alcorn State/ Fall to Southern

The UAPB volleyball team got the job done in three sets (25-8, 25-14, 25-19) to defeat the Alcorn State Lady Braves Friday on the road at Davey L Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex.

The Lady Lions were led by a double-double from Zykia Jones, who registered 13 kills and 16 digs on the day. Laila Fortson also added eight kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Samantha Newman chipped in for with 16 digs to go with two blocks from Marlina Andeson.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Lions grabbed control on the first point and never trailed to win the first set 25-8. UAPB led by as many as 17 points at 24-7 before finishing off the set. UAPB also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | UAPB continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-14 victory in set number two. The Lady Lions never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that showcased two lead changes before UAPB took over the lead. The UAPB offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | UAPB took the third set to win in straight sets. The Lady Lions led from the opening point on in the set to earn a 25-19 victory. UAPB opened up as much as an 11 point lead at 18-7 before closing out the set, totaling 15 kills in the process.

VS Southern

The UAPB volleyball team won the first set, but couldn’t hang on and lost 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 15-25, 16-25) to the Southern Lady Jaguars Sunday on the road at Seymour Gymnasium.

The loss dropped UAPB’s record to 3-15 overall and 1-3 in SWAC action.

Zykia Jones finished with 12 kills on the day to lead the Lady Lions offense. got 10 digs from Anaiah Jodan to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Lions won the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to secure the first set 25-17. UAPB led by as many as eight points at 10-2 before finishing off the set.

SET 2 | UAPB then lost set two 25-14, evening the match at a set apiece. The Lady Lions dropped the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | UAPB fell again in the third set to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Lady Lions lost a tough set 25-15. UAPB trailed by as many as 10 points as Southern grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that was tied up five times before the Lady Jaguars took over the lead.

SET 4 | UAPB lost set four and the match, falling 25-16. The Lady Lions trailed by as many as nine points as Southern grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 and UAPB wasn’t able to recover in a set that was knotted up just once before the Lady Jaguars took over.
