UAPB Chancellor Laurence B. Alexander who has served as Chancellor of UAPB since 2013 announced Monday that he is the sole finalist to become chancellor at the University of Michigan-Flint.
In letter to the “Golden Lion Family” saying he had some “bittersweet news to share.”
“I have been recommended as the next Chancellor of the University of Michigan – Flint effective July 1,” he wrote. “The recommended five-year appointment is pending approval by the University of Michigan Board of Regents at its regularly scheduled meeting on May 16. The Chancellor also serves as an Executive Officer of the University of Michigan.”
The letter said Dr. (Donald)) Bobbit will determine the next steps in leadership for UAPB. In the coming days and weeks, I will be working closely with him and our campus leaders to ensure a smooth transition.
According to the letter, Alexander said his 11 years of service has been the longest current tenue among public university campus leaders in the state.
He mentioned some of the accomplishments achieved under his watch, including 10-year university accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, acquiring funding for new construction and renovation of capital projects, increased public funding and new corporate and foundation through partnerships with premier national and global firms “leading to dozens of major gift donations to the university that included several of the largest investments in university history and contributed to raising the endowment by 250 percent.”
Alexander talked about renovation of existing facilities including the L.A. Davis Sr. Student Union, residence halls, H.O. Clemmons Arena, and new projects in the works including the Nursing Program building, track and soccer stadium, the softball clubhouse and a campus pedestrian mall.
“Though I will be leaving the leadership post at UAPB, I will continue to support and cheer for my HBCU,” Alexander said in closing.
