UAPB Women Hoops’ Hot Start Puts Away Southern At Home 70-53
PINE BLUFF, AR —The UAPB women’s basketball team got a 24-point performance from the bench on the way to a 70-53 win against the Southern Lady Jaguars at home Saturday.
The Lady Lions (5-12, 3-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Maya Peat, who had 15 points and six rebounds. Maori Davenport added a double-double off of the bench with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Demetria Shephard helped out with 12 points.
UAPB utilized excellent ball movement in Saturday’s game, piling up 23 assists on 26 made field goals. Coriah Beck‘s five assists paced the Lady Lions and Jelissa Reese also contributed with five assists of her own.
The UAPB defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday’s game, forcing 13 Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Tia Morgan led the way individually for the Lady Lions with one steal.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 4-3 advantage, UAPB went on an 8-0 run with 7:42 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kourtney Rittenberry, to increase its lead to 12-3. The Lady Lions then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 24-9 advantage. UAPB capitalized on five Southern turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:13 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 39-18, a score that would hold until halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 15 points close to the basket.
After intermission, UAPB held on to its advantage and owned a 56-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
The Lady Lions coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Lady Jaguars 14-12 in the fourth quarter. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
